The government will release capitation funds for junior and senior secondary schools to a tune of Ksh28 billion to schools countrywide before the end of this week, Education Cabinet Secretary Mr. Ezekiel Machogu has said.

Machogu said they will release Ksh15,040 to each Junior Secondary School (JSS) student and Ksh22,240 to each senior secondary school student.

Speaking when he visited Kametho and Siger Primary schools in Rarieda sub-county to donate infrastructure support funds, Machogu said that the money will reach all the schools before Friday this week.

The CS who was accompanied by his ICT counterpart Eliud Owalo assured education stakeholders of the government’s commitment to ensure that all children have access to quality education.

He revealed that they have come up with a funding model that will ensure students from poor backgrounds are supported to access higher education.

Mr. Machogu also noted that in line with effecting climate change mitigation, the Ministry will now require that school heads have the obligation to ensure they plant trees in their schools.

“School heads will from now on be signing performance contracting which will entail their programmes on climate change mitigation. It will be used to gauge their performance alongside academic performance and other management tools,” he said.

In the climate change mitigation plan for schools, the government will require that schools establish tree nurseries and have a section in school compounds to host ‘school forests’.

“This will ensure that there is competition in climate change among school heads and ranking done to establish the best performing heads countrywide just like it happens in academic performance,” he explained.

Machogu took the opportunity to urge Kenyans to embrace the proposed housing programme which has sparked a lot of controversy in the country, noting that it is for the good for the general public.

The CS stated that the programme will give Kenyans an opportunity to own homes adding that it will also provide employment to majority of youth who have been languishing in poverty because of unemployment.
