The Equity Group Foundation is championing the development of leadership skills in schools to nurture students into exceptional leaders and role models in society.
Addressing 1,816 Wings to Fly scholars from Mombasa, Taita Taveta, Kwale, and Mtwapa Sub-county during the 15th Wings to Fly Congress at Mama Ngina Girls Secondary School in Mombasa, Equity Group Foundation Director Eric Naivasha emphasized that education goes beyond the confines of the classroom.
“Our theme – educate, empower, and lead – embodies the essence of success. We believe that by providing our scholars with education and empowerment, they can in turn empower their communities, paving the way for success in their leadership journey,” Naivasha explained.

The ongoing congress has delved into critical issues affecting scholars, including drugs, corruption, relationships, early marriages, social media influence, and peer pressure.
These discussions aim to equip students with the necessary tools to overcome challenges and achieve their aspirations.
Kisauni Sub County Director of Education (SCDE) Steve Nabere pointed out the importance of empowerment in helping students navigate life’s challenges.

“These are the leaders of tomorrow, and now is the time to empower them. Despite the challenges in leadership such as corruption and tribalism, we are guiding these children to understand that true leadership is about serving their communities,” Nabere noted.
Through the programme, Naivasha mentioned that scholars are being groomed to become role models with a purposeful life, instilling values essential for effective leadership.
The Equity Foundation has sponsored over 60,000 scholars through the programme, boasting a remarkable transition rate to university of over 82 per cent.
Naivasha noted that 86 per cent of Equity scholars assume leadership positions in schools and universities, a testament to the success of the foundation’s leadership and empowerment programmes.
The congress, graced by various speakers, including religious leaders, government officials, partners, community leaders, and industry captains, aims to provide students with soft skills necessary for success in life.
The programme also offers a pathway to the Equity leadership programme, where outstanding students are offered paid internships at the bank before joining university.
