Equity has launched an initiative to support learning public secondary schools to transition from wood-fuel based cooking to cleaner, sustainable, and environmental sources of cooking and lighting.
It is estimated that public secondary schools spend Sh10 billion on firewood annually.
Speaking during a tree planting exercise at People with Disability Centre at Wote town, Equity Bank Director of Marketing David Nyamu said the alternative source of fuel will help combat climate change.
The tree planting exercise was organised by the Council of Governors with Makueni County Government ahead of the devolution exercise taking place at Makueni High school come August.
He said to fight climate change there was need for total clean energy.
“We have found out that public secondary schools spend Sh10 billion on firewood annually. That tells you so many trees are destroyed thus by the alternative source we will save the trees and our forests,” added Nyamu.
The director gave an example of Alliance Boys saying the research they carried, showed that the school which has a population of 2500 students spends a million shillings per month.
“I appeal for us to work together since climate change cuts across some many issues affecting all sectors. Equity Bank Foundation is targeting to plant 35 million trees nationwide to increase forest cover,” Nyamu.
