Basic Education Principal Secretary, Prof. Julius Bitok, has called on teachers in Uasin Gishu County to take proactive steps to improve student performance, emphasising the importance of quality basic education.
Bitok, who hails from Uasin Gishu, was speaking at the 13th Annual Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Uasin Gishu County Conference for Principals.
Bitok highlighted that the region’s performance in education remains below average, a situation he described as concerning, with President William Ruto hailing from the area.
He urged local educators to leverage available opportunities to improve the region’s educational standards. “What is it that we are not getting right?” Bitok questioned, challenging principals and teachers to identify the gaps and address them head-on.
Bitok urged school principals to share suggestions on how to better address schools that did not attract grade 10 students.
“We do not want to close down schools; rather, we want to make sure every learner has access to opportunities for growth,” he added.
The PS expressed optimism about the future of education in Kenya, acknowledging that the state of education is strong despite current challenges.
He urged the administrators not only to implement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum effectively but also to build resilient and well-managed institutions that support both learners and educators.
On financial support for schools, Bitok assured principals that capitation funds would be released in a timely manner before the start of the second term to ensure smooth school operations.
