Residents of Eor-Ekule have called on local leaders to prioritise youth-focused initiatives as a strategy to combat the rising menace of drug and substance abuse in the area.
Led by politician Patrick Saruni, the community voiced concern over the increasing cases of crime, which they believe are closely linked to drug use among the youth.
“Drugs have become a serious threat to the future of our young people,” said Saruni during a youth football tournament held at Eor-Ekule Primary School. “We must eradicate this vice by giving the youth better alternatives through sports and talent development.”
Saruni emphasized that supporting youth through sports is not just a recreational activity but a powerful tool for empowerment and social change.
“Some of our own young men have gone on to represent Kenya in international tournaments like CHAN as part of Harambee Stars. That shows what our youth can achieve with the right support,” he noted.

The residents urged political and community leaders to allocate more funding toward youth programs, particularly in sports and creative arts, which they believe can steer young people away from destructive behaviors.
Local elders also joined the call, highlighting another growing concern—environmental degradation and poor waste management in Eor-Ekule. They warned that unless immediate action is taken, the area could face health risks during the rainy season.
“We are on the brink of a cholera outbreak if waste continues to pile up like this,” said one elder. “We urge the Narok County Environment Department to take urgent action.”
Saruni echoed these concerns, stressing the need for community involvement in conservation efforts.
“Environmental conservation is not optional. Clean surroundings are part of healthy living and must be prioritized, especially now that the rains are approaching,” he said.
Residents hope that their collective voice will prompt both county and national leaders to take decisive steps in addressing the twin challenges of drug abuse and environmental neglect in Eor-Ekule.
