Environmentalist Shiku Mutero has planned to walk from Trans Nzoia to Kajiado to raise awareness on importance of growing fruit trees, covering 372 kilometres.

The walk is dubbed Green Walk.

Mutero, who spoke with Education News, said her journey will start on July 29 in Trans Nzoia County headquarters and will take a week.

The green warrior will be received in Nairobi County by Council of Governors Chair Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru and Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku in Kajiado.

The environmentalist said the main determination for her awareness walk is to keep learners in schools through fruit feeding and address government’s move to cut budget for school feeding programme. It will also support proper solid waste disposal and management.

“Trees support lives; many children go to school starving. They will get a chance to get a fruit in their schools. This will keep them in school,” she said, adding that fruit trees give good health and support families economically.

Mutero is the founder Lynn’s Foundation. Since 2019, the foundation has planted more than half a million trees and given free tree seedlings during birthdays, graduations and anniversaries.

“We have gifted many people tree seedlings; we have gifted Trans Nzoia, Kajiado counties, governors and German ambassador to Kenya, among others,” she said.

Nkaimurunya Secondary in Kajiado North is among schools that have benefited from the foundation’s activities, so far planting three thousand fruit trees and more than three hundred ornamental trees.
