Ensure form ones report to school, local administrators urged

By Charles Ojiambo

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has called on local administrators to follow up on students who are yet to join form one.

Speaking after visiting secondary schools in Busia County to assess the admission progress, Magoha said the administrators have a responsibility to ensure the learners report to school.

“If we work together we shall realize 100% primary to secondary transition,” he said.

He revealed that the county had achieved 85% of the form one enrollment.

“I don’t see why Busia County cannot realize 100% admission and yet it has been leading in academics for many years. It’s possible and we all have to put in more efforts to ensure those students who are still at home report to school,” he added.

The CS who was accompanied by education officials led by the county Director of Education Mr. Thadeus Awuor, visited Mundika Boys High school and Esirisia Secondary School.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to improve infrastructure in public schools,

“As you are aware the government uses GPS system to determine the status of schools in terms of infrastructure and I can tell you we have tried and we are still improving. But there are many schools which still have space to hold more students,” said the tough talking CS.

Magoha noted that many schools in Western region were well equipped, thus, the need to replicate that in performance.

According to statistics released by the ministry early this week, at least eighty thousand students are yet to join form one across the county. Most of those who are yet to join schools have cited lack of school fees after many families were devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic, as many parents and guardians lost their jobs.
