An engineer Maragia Nyagwencha has led a women group that was formed by female teachers in Bonchari Constituency to plant 500 trees at Bomariba Primary School.

Bogimari Queens Women Group was initiated to help the community around by first identifying their needs and finding workable solutions that are sustainable.

Nyagwencha lauded the women group for its efforts to curb the adverse effects of climate change, saying their indulgence will help mitigate the challenges however small the contribution might be.

Observing that climate change is a ticking time bomb, he asked the women to stand up and equip themselves with tools to fight it because they are the ones to suffer the most alongside children whenever there is an economic or political crisis.

“Women and school girls must be involved in the formulation and implementation of climate change responses to ensure a society with a collective sense to fight and reap the benefits,” he said.

Thanking the women for starting a revolving fund to support the girl child attain her full potential, he donated 20,000 shillings towards the sustainability of their scheme.

Group chairperson Eunice Nyabeta said they started seven years ago with five women who came together and started contributing 200 shillings each on a merry-go-round basis to buy household items.

They then thought of sponsoring girls from poor homes to continue with secondary education as it grew, appealing to well-wishers to visit their Suneka office for information on how they can join hands and be game changers in the community.

The secretary Mary Matara said that during the long holidays they intend to visit local churches to meet single mothers, teenage girls, widows and single mothers to encourage and empower them with life skills.
