Engage your children in constructive work this holiday, parents told

Nyamira County Assembly Nominated MCA Maureen Marwa has asked parents to encourage their children to involve themselves in constructive activities during these April holiday.

She said that while holidays are meant to relax and refresh the mind from routine class work, the usual studies should be replaced by learning other arts like cookery, shoe mending and fencing among others instead of idling.

The MCA cautioned parents against leaving their children of tender age to wander alone on the roads, markets and along river banks in order to avoid road accidents, kidnapping and drowning.

“The world is experiencing all manner of evils and this calls for careful parental care of our children in whom we have invested our future,” she said.

Speaking to Education News in Nyamira town she said substance abuse among the secondary and university students is attributed to adults who mix freely with them and share drinks in social places without reprimanding them.

Saying that drug abuse and alcohol impair the brains of the victims and affects their studies, he asked the youth to avoid them and concentrate in studies for their lives.

She asked learners of all levels to enroll in short courses like ICT and study foreign languages to wide their scope for positive communication and interaction.

She underscored the importance of embracing the study of foreign languages because they enable them to grow in the highly dynamic world.

She said that the knowledge of foreign languages and Computer Information Technology (ICT) will increase their chances of employment even in the foreign countries.

“Knowledge of foreign languages enable students to learn mix, learn and interpret the culture of other communities for a peaceful international cooperation,” she said.

Marwa promise that her office will work with education institutions to encourage students to work hard through motivational speeches and provision of apersonal needs like sanitary towels to girls.
