A new report according to Economic Survey 2021 has revealed that many students opt for diploma and certificate courses because many companies are seeking people with middle level skills.

The survey revealed that 30,290 out of 56,455 government sponsored diploma students placed by KUCCPS are women. Male students opting for diploma were 26,165 while those preferring certificate courses were 13,531. Artisan courses had 3,477 females and 2,965 males.

A case study by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection in 2020 indicated that technical staff in the energy sector contributed up to 40 percent of employees, giving an upper advantage to diploma holders.

Globally, from January, the United Kingdom allowed highly skilled Kenyans without degree qualifications under post-Brexit immigration rules to apply for work permits.

The new point-based immigration system by Britain lowered job application requirements to a minimum skill level of A-level.

The relaxation of visa rules paves way for Kenyan professionals, mostly in the fields of IT, electrical work, accountancy and plumbing to have a fair competition with other migrants.

Data from Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) indicated that 15,547 candidates who scored C+ and above in 2020 KCSE opted for certificate and diploma courses.

At least 4,840 candidates decided on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
