Education stakeholders in Taita Taveta county have decried the low number of primary school teachers in the region.

Speaking to Education News from Wundanyi town recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Taita Taveta county branch executive secretary Mr. Lennox Mshila urged the government to recruit more teachers in the country and deploy them to the county.

He revealed that in order to boost the number of teachers in understaffed schools, the county needed over 700 teachers.

‘Currently, many teachers in the region are overworked due to teacher shortage. If more teachers are employed, teachers will be able to effectively discharge their duties due to reduced workload,’ he said.

He added that many school children are understaffed because many schools in the county are understaffed.

He further attributed the dismal performance in national examinations in the county to teacher shortage.

He asked the existing teachers in the county to be dedicated to their work so as to post impressive results in the forthcoming national exams.
