Embu Woman Rep vows to enrol teen mothers back to school

Embu county Woman Representative Pamela Njoki Njeru has launched a programme that will see teen mothers from the county who dropped out of their students are enrolled back to school.

The Woman MP said the programme is aimed at ensuring all the students get a second chance to complete their education despite being a teenage mother.

While speaking at the University of Embu during issuance of bursary funds worth Ksh 2.4 million to needy students, the woman representative told girls who gave up their studies that giving birth should not be the end of acquiring education.

“These students are many and cannot be ignored. My plan is to have them all in school so that they can have a chance to study and stand by their own,” she said.

Njoki also urged parents to sacrifice and take care of their grandchildren as their daughters re-enroll in order to make the programme a success.

The legislator said that through bursaries she will ensure that teen mothers are given priority during issuance of bursaries and scholarships as well as initiate a counseling programme for all young mothers in secondary schools.

She noted that education was a key investment that she was focusing on, saying it will abolish poverty and inculcate a culture of self-dependency.

“Once they go back to school the teen mothers need counseling as they may suffer stigmatization and ridicule from other learners. My office will accord them all the kind of support,” she observed.

The initiative was lauded by Jane Karimi, a nominated MCA, who said she will support the Woman Representative in kind.
