Teachers in Embu County have welcomed the appointment of Dr Jamleck Muturi as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) chairperson.

Led by Embu branch Kuppet Executive Secretary Jacob Karuraa, the teachers said Dr Muturi is equal to the task, adding that they looked forward to having a serious engagement with him when he assumes office.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last month forwarded Dr Muturi’s name for approval or rejection by the National Assembly, alongside Timon Oyucho to the position of member of the commission.

Dr Muturi’s and Oyucho’s names were submitted to the president by a selection panel chaired by Thomas Koyier.

Dr Muturi  who started his career as a classroom teacher and rose through the ranks to become a principal, a university lecturer and County Executive Member at the Embu County Government will replace Dr Lydia Nzomo who retired in November last year.

While a section of Kenyans on social media complained about regional balancing in the appointment, others were quick to point out that Dr Muturi bagged the position on merit.

Muturi beat six other contestants to emerge top in the interviews.

The Embu teaching fraternity said Muturi’s appointment is a great honour to the people of Embu where he was born and brought up and has been working as the County Agriculture CEC.

“Kuppet Embu would wish to take this early opportunity to congratulate Dr Muturi for his appointment as the chair TSC Kenya.

“He started his teaching profession at St Peter’s Kathakwa and then proceeded to Nguviu Boys and later became the deputy principal. He was later promoted to head M’tetu Secondary, Kavutiri Boys and later Moi High School Mbiruri,” said Karuraa.

“As an astute Biology teacher, he has helped many students in secondary schools and universities as a lecturer. Kuppet Embu branch wishes Dr Muturi the best of luck in his new endeavours,” said Karuraa.

The TSC Act caps the terms of a chairperson to two terms of three years each-totalling six years.

Dr Muturi holds a Phd in Agricultural Entomology, Masters degree in the same field and Bachelor of Education degree, all from Kenyatta University.

He also holds a Higher Diploma in Human Resources Management from the Institute of Personnel Management.
