Embrace technical skills if you fail to reach university, youth told

Gideon Omariba.

An educationist has appealed to youth who fail to get university grades to embrace technical skills as the increasing demand opens more opportunities.

Gideon Omariba noted that the demand for technicians is high but few youth have the skills required, forcing investors to source for them from other regions.

He challenged youth to develop a positive attitude towards technical education and acquire the skills to be self-reliant, noting that the government is investing in housing projects and will require skills in plumbing, metal work and electrical installation, among others.

“Skilled workers are paid highly based on the cost of the project unlike employees in the formal sector,” Omariba told Education News, observing that the developed world embraced technical workers in their industries to reach the highly industrialized status.

Meanwhile, Kisii County Youth Officer Aatos Mogoi has implored university and college graduates to enroll for technical skills to be self-reliant.

The officer said private investors want graduates with extra skills who can multi-task, be more productive and save time.

“Graduates should adopt new technologies to back up their degrees and Diplomas to compete in the shrinking job market,” Mogoi told Education News.

He also challenged youth to form groups and companies and seek public funds to invest in income generating projects.
