Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has asked teachers to love their students as they mold them into future responsible citizens as love is the strongest of all virtues bestowed to man.

“When love sits between teachers and their learners, education matters sink into their brains easily,” he said.

CS Machogu was speaking at Kereri Girls Secondary school on Thursday where he took lunch with students.

The CS underscored the importance for teachers to have adequate contact hours with their learners.

“Learn from Jesus who was a great educator because he walked daily with his disciples in the field teaching and demonstrating important life lessons to them,” he added.

The CS who was accompanied by Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere and secondary school principals expressed his satisfaction on transition but noted that 15,640 pupils out of those who sat KCPE last year have not reported to school.

“I call upon all chiefs, their assistants and parents to ensure that pupils do not remain at home because of lack of uniform or school fees,” he said.

Concerning the critics of the Competency Based Curriculum, the CS told those skeptical to avoid being pessimistic because the system was there to stay.

“We have made many strides in embracing the system because it is relevant to the development of manpower in this country although we still need to fine-tune it gradually for its totality,” he affirmed.

Reiterating the government’s commitment about investing in quality education, the CS said that the government employed 30,000 teachers recently to teach the Juniour Secondary School (JSS) classes.

“We shall continue to employ and deploy more teachers to our schools because we know they are the main drivers of education in this country,” he said.

The CS asked individual principals to guide their Boards of Management in schools to tailor out programmes that suit their institutions according to the available resources.

He lauded the Principal of Kereri Girls, Mrs. Tabita Mogonchi, whom he said is zealous to develop the education of the girl child.

He also asked principals and their Members of the Boards of Management to work as a team with the County Education Boards to find more ways of championing education development in the region.
