The teachers who were recently interdicted for refusing to go back to their work stations in the volatile North Eastern will tomorrow meet the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Education.
In a letter addressed to three of their leaders Charles Achol, Peter Kamoet and Nathaniel Cheruiyot dated October 13, 2023, the teachers will be meeting the lawmakers regarding their rejected quest to be transferred out of the North Eastern region.
“This is to inform you that the Departmental Committee on Education considered and accepted your request. Consequently, the committee has scheduled to meet you on Thursday 19th October, 2023 at 10.00 a.m,” read the letter signed by Jeremiah Ndombi on behalf of National Assembly Clerk.
In their petition to Parliament, the teachers want the House to engage TSC to effect immediate transfers and to reinstate interdicted and exited teachers and pay them the salaries which are owed and due.
The teachers camped at their usual meeting point at Nairobi’s Green Park terminus where they were addressed by Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) National Secretary Wangonya Wangenye, who had negotiated for the release of some of them who had been detained earlier at Capitol Hill Police Station for picketing.
Before then, Wangenye had formally asked TSC to revoke the letters of interdiction and reinstate the sacked teachers.
He further asked the Commission to transfer the teachers on priority basis and commence the process of recruiting qualified local teachers to fill the gap left.
KETHAWA has also presented a petition to Parliament seeking the same interventions.
