A high-stakes eligibility row is brewing in school sports just weeks before the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One National Games, after a fresh audit flagged several institutions for fielding ineligible players.
The audit, compiled and signed by P.F. Otieno, Head of ICT in the office of the KSSSA Secretary General, has exposed widespread irregularities across rugby, athletics, and handball, raising serious questions about the integrity of the upcoming championships.
Rugby powerhouse Bungoma High School has been singled out with 22 players listed as ineligible, the highest figure in the report. The revelation threatens to derail one of the most formidable sides in the competition and could dramatically reshape the rugby contest at the national level.

In athletics, Kamusinde Boys High School has eight athletes flagged, sparking concern in a discipline that traditionally delivers a bulk of medals. Any disqualifications could deal a major blow to the school’s medal prospects on track and field.
Handball has not been spared either, with Musingu High School and Moi Girls High School Kamusinga, each having one player listed as ineligible. Officials warn that even a single breach can alter match outcomes and affect team eligibility.
The audit highlights recurring weaknesses in player registration, age verification, and transfer documentation, areas KSSSA has been striving to tighten following past controversies. The involvement of the ICT office underscores a shift toward data-driven verification aimed at sealing loopholes and restoring credibility.
With the Kisumu games fast approaching, the implications are far-reaching. Teams could face disqualification or be forced into last-minute squad changes, potentially altering the competitive landscape across multiple disciplines.
KSSSA has yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that verification is ongoing, with decisive action expected once the review is complete.
