Concerns have been raised over the rise in teenage pregnancies in Elgeyo Marakwet, with new data showing the region’s rate has surpassed the national average.
According to a report by Nutrition International, teen pregnancies in the country currently stand at 15 percent, a figure described as deeply worrying by health advocates.
“The trend is alarming. Most of these girls drop out of school and are unable to continue with their education,” said Christine Okena, the NI Coordinator, during a community engagement forum in Iten town.
Okena attributed the surge in cases to widespread poverty, which she said is pushing families into desperation.

“Many parents cannot afford basic needs for their children, making them vulnerable to exploitation,” she added.
She emphasised the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration, including government agencies, community leaders, and civil society, to combat the crisis.
“Teen pregnancy is not just a health issue—it is a threat to the future of our girls. We must come together and address this urgently,” Okena stressed.
Nutrition International also appealed for increased funding to support programs aimed at preventing teenage pregnancies and protecting girls’ rights.
“A serious lack of funding is holding back our efforts. If we are to make real progress, we need sustained investment in sexual and reproductive health programs,” said Okena.
The report further sparked public outrage over claims that some security officers are abetting the vice by failing to take action against perpetrators. Residents were warned against resolving such cases outside the legal system.
“There must be accountability. We urge the community to report these cases and let justice take its course,” Okena said firmly.
Local leaders and child rights activists echoed the call for urgent action, warning that continued inaction could lead to a lost generation of girls whose education and potential are being derailed.
