Enrolment to Vocational Technical Centers (VTCs) and Polytechnics in Elgeyo Marakwet has tripled in the last two years due to improved facilities and training manpower, Governor Wisley Rotich has said.
Governor Rotich said the enrolment stood at 1,080 students when he took over, but there has been an increase to more than 3,800 students so far.
Speaking in Iten town, he pointed out that the VTCs play a major role in empowering the youth with necessary skills to engage in self-employment.
“Through a sustained improvement of our VTCs and sensitization of our communities, especially the youth, we have managed to convince them that enrolling in a polytechnic is not degrading as was the notion before,” he said.
He also lauded the Pepea Programme, stating that it has seen thousands of students from the county flying abroad for studies.
Rotich noted that bursary disbursement is usually done in a transparent manner, adding that his administration intends to increase the amount of bursaries to students in the county.
“There is nothing pleasant as being capable to pay your children’s school fees comfortably without having to line up for bursaries. The county intends to increase the amount of bursaries so as to ensure all our children continue with their education without challenges,” he said.
