Victims of heavy rains in Ngorgoroi area, Elgeyo Marakwet County, have received food and non-food assistance from the Kenya Red Cross Society following recent floods that left several families displaced.

The rains claimed the life of a middle-aged woman after a tree fell on her house, as floods affected at least eight households, destroying homes and property.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, County Executive Committee Member for Infrastructure, Emmy Kosgey, urged residents to take precautionary measures by cutting down mature trees located near their houses to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“We are urging our people to remove old and mature trees close to their homes because they pose a serious danger during heavy rains and strong winds,” Kosgey said.

She appealed to well-wishers and humanitarian organizations to support the affected families, noting that many of them had lost their belongings and were going through immense suffering.

“These families are in great need after losing their property. Any form of support will go a long way in helping them rebuild their lives,” she added.

Kosgey also commended individuals and organizations that responded during the Chesongoch disaster, where at least 35 people lost their lives, saying survivors still require financial and psychosocial support.

“I want to thank everyone who stood with us during the Chesongoch tragedy. The victims continue to need financial assistance and psychosocial support as they heal from the trauma,” she said.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Red Cross and county government, saying the assistance had restored their hope during a difficult time.

“This support has given us strength and hope to move on despite what we have lost,” said one of the beneficiaries.

Areas including Liter, Kapsowar, Chesongoch, and regions along the hanging valleys remain highly prone to floods and mudslides. Pressure is now mounting on the government to relocate residents to safer areas and consider turning the high-risk zones into forest land to prevent future disasters.
