Elections mark a turning point in primary school leadership

The recent elections of Student Council leaders at Tampalal Primary School in West Pokot County is a turning point in leadership as learners were given a say in the management of schools.

Hitherto, elections and councils were a privilege of secondary schools; and even so, few have had the opportunity to choose leaders as teachers hand-pick their preferences based on their own whims and biases.

It was an eye opener as the greatest link between teachers and students was established through the ballot, allowing democracy to thrive and take root even in such formative age as in primary school.

The elected student (pupil) leaders mainly oversee the learners’ affairs in various capacities, including their education, quality progression in their various grades, and their general security in school.

The free and fair elections were conducted peacefully and all the students participated, exercising their democratic right to vote and elect their leaders of choice.

Congratulating the elected leaders, the head teacher Christine Lotee saw future leaders in them.

“I am satisfied with elected council leaders as this is a sign of quality leaders who will govern our country in the near future in various capacities,” Lotee said.

Lawi Pkemoi was elected President while Brendan Chepkasi was elected Deputy President.
