A student at the Eldoret National Polytechnic has scooped the second best prize in a continental technology challenge held at the University of Nairobi recently.

Lamex Odanga, a trainee at the Eldoret National Polytechnic (ENP), has emerged second best in the Mechanical Drawing and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software applications Category at the 8th edition of the Africa Tech Challenge (ATC) competition.

ENP Principal Charles Koech noted that the institution was ranked overall runners-up in the category.

The awarding ceremony took place at the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi on August 31.

The competition kicked off on July 24 at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and ran until August 25.

Speaking during the launch at TUK, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Esther Muoria said that the technology challenge marks a pivotal moment in the collective pursuit to push the boundaries of human potential, which will create an opportunity to showcase skills, creativity and problem-solving abilities at the intersection of science and technology.

She noted that the challenge has been a partnership between the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education since 2010.

“Through this partnership, 154 TVET institutions have been equipped with modern equipment, enabling them to produce graduates with hands-on experience to meet the current labour and industrial demands,” she said.

The contest also attracted participants from other countries including Egypt, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Gabon, and Ivory Coast.

AVIC Director Zhao Lei Lei encouraged all ATC participants to continue embracing the skills achieved in the training.

“As we conclude this season of ATC, let us remember that the learning does not stop here, the challenges you have faced and conquered are just stepping-stones towards greater accomplishments,” Lei said.

ATC is a skill-based initiative started in 2014 to empower the youth by equipping them with technical skills using training programmes and competitions, with the most outstanding participant receiving various prizes.
