“In the past four years, Kisii University has witnessed many elderly students, especially men, graduating with diplomas and degrees in various disciplines. I salute those great men and ask others to emulate them,” Martin said.
Kisii University don Lumumba Martin has advised older people to return to university and pursue courses of their choice for personal development, saying that education has no age limit.
Yesterday, during a consultative meeting for South Mugirango Constituency elders at Kisii Sports Club, Lumumba pointed out the need for older generations to acquire advanced knowledge in today’s rapidly changing, digital-driven economy.
He added that such learning would benefit their financial, mental, and emotional well-being.
He cited notable members of the Abagusii Cultural and Development Council (ACDC), such as Matundura Araka, Pr. Harrison Moronya and Bosire Angwenyi pursued law degrees to enhance their roles as arbitrators in society.
The meeting, which brought together experienced professionals from various fields, including teaching, was graced by prominent elders like South Mugirango’s first MP, Omweri Kibwage, former Gucha Branch KNUT treasurers Joel Martin and Tom Okenye, and David Kombo.

Omweri Kibwage, a former teacher turned politician, thanked Martin for convening the forum and described it as “a good platform for elderly people to meet, share experiences, and expand their networks.”
On his part, Kombo said that higher education contributes to better emotional control and longevity.
“Apart from life experience, quality education helps older people reason and bridges the generational gap in society,” Kombo remarked.

He also advocated for law and mediation-related courses, arguing that such knowledge would empower elders to serve as reliable mediators in addressing emerging socio-economic and political conflicts.
Additionally, the elders expressed their support for Dr Fred Matiang’i’s potential presidential bid and praised his transformative reforms in the education sector.
