Egerton University has suspended all teaching and learning activities following a nationwide strike by university staff unions, disrupting academic operations across the institution.
In a notice released on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the University Senate announced the temporary suspension during its 580th meeting, citing the ongoing industrial action by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU).
The strike has reportedly hindered the smooth running of academic programs, prompting the administration to take precautionary measures.
As part of the directive, all undergraduate students were ordered to vacate campus premises by Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
However, the university clarified that the order does not apply to Medical and Law students, international students, and postgraduate students, who will continue to remain on campus.
“The University Senate has resolved to suspend all teaching and learning until the industrial dispute is resolved,” reads the notice issued by the Registrar, Academic Affairs.
The institution further assured that the resumption date will be communicated through its official website and social media platforms.
Students have been advised to monitor official communication channels for updates and contact the university through the provided email and telephone lines for any inquiries.

The industrial action has affected several public universities across Kenya, with lecturers and non-teaching staff demanding improved terms of service and settlement of pending allowances.
As negotiations between unions and government representatives continue, academic programs remain in limbo, raising concerns over possible disruption of the academic calendar.
Egerton University, one of Kenya’s leading public institutions, has previously experienced similar interruptions linked to industrial disputes, but stakeholders hope for a swift resolution to prevent further setbacks.
