Education sector expected to suffer major cuts as Treasury tables 2025/26 budget later today

The free primary and secondary education will suffer a significant blow as National Treasury CS John Mbadi is expected to present the  Financial Year 2025/26 budget to Parliament later today.

According to the allocation, despite the education sector getting the lion’s share of the Ksh 4.2 trillion budget, key sub-sectors have witnessed a massive reduction in allocation.

The capitation allocated to secondary schools under the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) has been reduced by KShs . 3 billion, while the amount sent to primary school under the Free Primary Education (FPE) has been reduced by KShs. 900 million.

The reduction comes even after principals and head teachers complained of delayed disbursement of funds to schools, which hinders smooth operation.

Recently, Education CS, Julius Ogamba, was tasked by the National Assembly, chaired by Tinderet MP, Julius Melly, to explain whether education in Kenya is free or not

Juniors Secondary School (JSS) capitation has been reduced by KShs 2 billion amid the transition from the 8-4-4 system of education to Competency-Based Education (CBE). The government allocates a total of 15,000 per learner in Junior Secondary School.

Other deductions include KShs.1.3 billion deducted from government sponsored students in private universities, KShs.250 million deducted from ICT integration in secondary school, KShs.600 million deducted from the school feeding programme in public schools, KShs.250 million from the University of Eldoret engineering complex construction and KShs.250 million deducted from the Open University.
