A Ministry of Education official now wants more girls to take up science oriented courses in order to enable them pursue professional courses at various levels.
Hassan Duale who is the Director in charge of Field Services and at the Ministry of Education indicated that girls can do well in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects when given a chance.
The official lamented that the number of girls taking up science subjects was still very low compared to their male counterparts.
Duale who was speaking in Kisumu said it was time stereotyping about science subjects that they belong to men was discarded.
The official said schools should follow new directives which have been spelt out by the ministry in order to safeguard the lives of learners.
Duale encouraged school heads to keep tabs with whatever is happening in their areas of jurisdiction.
He said they should ensure learners do not travel at night and at the same asked schools to keep inspecting kitchens and other facilities to maintain hygiene.
Duale said a high level of hygiene was a major requirement in order to avert tragedies like what occurred at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls and Butere Boys High Schools where disease outbreaks were reported.
Four students perished at Mukumu Girls while Butere Boys was closed down over an outbreak of an epidemic.
