Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has asked universities to embrace intensive research and innovation aimed at generating more income instead of over-relying on government funding.

Machogu was speaking at Kisii University today during their 12th graduation ceremony.

He witnessed the installation of Prof Nathan Oyori Ogechi as the second VC of the institution after the retirement of Prof John Akama early this year.

The CS asked universities to live harmoniously with the communities where they are located by understanding their problems and trying to solve them when it is possible.

“Try to emulate other successful global institutions like Harvard University who live well with society by accepting and solving their problems,” he said.

During the occasion, more than 3000 graduands were conferred with degrees in various fields, including 21 with PhDs.

Machogu decried the small number of students pursuing PhD degrees each year and attributed it to lack of ambition and general laziness by majority of learners who dislike leaving their comfort zone.

He asked the graduands to advance their studies as a way of refreshing their knowledge from time to time in order to remain relevant in the job market.

The CS was flanked by the university Chancellor Dr. Sarah Ruto, Kisii County Governor Simba Arati and his deputy Robert Monda, among other leaders.

Dr Ruto asked the public to have confidence in the university, adding that their priority is seeking excellence.

Kisii County Governor Simba Arati promised the county government’s support for the university to achieve its academic goals.

“We shall always partner with you to enable you strengthen your output,” he said.
