Education Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha on Friday flagged off class readers in English and Kiswahili to be distributed to all public primary schools and 1,500 low-cost primary schools.

The books, about 826,048 in total, will benefit learners in grade 1 to four in public primary schools and private low cost primary schools.

Prof. Magoha said the books will be useful in fostering the provision of equitable quality education to all children in public schools in the country.

The exercise took place at the Kenya Institute for Curriculum Development (KICD). Present during the occasion included the Chief Executive Officer of KICD, Prof. Charles O. Ong’ondo and the Chairperson of Kenya Publishers Association, Mr. Lawrence Njagi.

Prof. Magoha said the books will benefit all children—those who are abled and those differently abled alike.

Prof. Magoha thanked the USA government for the support in the literacy programme, saying further technical support will help in the smooth transition to the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) the government was rolling out in schools.

He said the contents of the readers were consistent with the culture of Kenyans, saying it was important that schools teach children their own culture to assist in their growth and development.

USAID Kenya and East Africa Education and Youth Office Director Michelle Chen said materials in the readers were aligned to the CBC.

She said they will assist teachers and students to strengthen their foundational reading and comprehension skills necessary for academic success.
