Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos Ogamba has officially announced the deployment of 2,000 newly recruited trainers to TVET institutions.

In his address during a ceremony at Lake Naivasha Resort yesterday, Ogamba highlighted the existing trainer shortage in the TVET sector, a gap identified by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

With the addition of these new trainers, the total number of TVET trainers will rise from 7,351 to 9,351, improving the current trainer-to-trainee ratio to 1:25.

“Currently there are 7,351 trainers in the TVET sector and with the deployment of the 2,000 today, the number will increase to 9,351,” said the CS.

Despite this progress, Ogamba emphasized that the ratio still falls short of the optimal levels required for effective training, especially given the increasing population of TVET trainees, which now stands at 420,559.

“With the posting of the 2,000 trainers today, the ratio of the trainers to trainees will be 1:25, which is below what is required in the sector,” Ogamba stated.

According to the CS, the deployment of the 2,000 trainers follows a presidential directive issued in October 2023, describing the move as timely, particularly as the Ministry of Education (MoE) is in the midst of implementing the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) and Dual Training programmes.

Ogamba also directed the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for TVET Dr Esther Muoria to conduct a workload analysis of all TVET trainers and laboratory technicians.

This initiative seeks to ensure the optimal utilization of trainers, preventing both overstaffing and understaffing.

Additionally, the newly recruited trainers will undergo retooling on the CBET curriculum to ensure its effective implementation.

Ogamba announced the development of a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) policy aimed at keeping trainers up-to-date with the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
