West Pokot Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) Director Joseph Tonyirwo has asked teachers to double their efforts and adapt to the demands of the 21st century learners which involves digital literacy and a learner-centered approach.
Addressing over 300 teachers at a week-long seminar at Konyao Secondary school themed: ‘Adjusting to the new system of Education; The Competency-Based Curriculum’ which is in line with the county’s transformative agenda with education being a major pillar, the director noted that learning is now based on the needs and potential framework of individual learners under a flexible schedule and parameters that move and shift according to the learners demands.
Tonyirwo asked the teachers to embrace the CBC core values which include communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and imagination and self efficacy.
He added that the curriculum’s vision and mission is based on a world where every person has access to relevant, quality education and lifelong learning. He stated that the curriculum is one of the most effective tools for bridging the gap between education and development and as thus global dialogue and intellectual leadership can be guaranteed.
The Director advised them to hone their skills which have to be expressed through inclusion, motivation, quality assurance, consistency, transparency and innovative approaches.
He advised them to lead learners to realize narrative-driven learning, visualized learning, hands-on approaches and connectivity to the most immediate community.
Tonyirwo assured teachers that the county will continue upgrading more ECDE centres through provision of learning materials and infrastructure and invited them for dialogue in case any issue arises.
