ECDE school feeding programme has improved learners’ attendance, Education boss says

Machakos County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education Joyce Mwikali has revealed that the county’s school feeding programme for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres has greatly improved school attendance.

While speaking at Miumbuni Secondary School, Mwikali noted that the population in ECDE centers had increased from 35,000 to 37,000 pupils.

She disclosed that plans were underway to ensure the learners also get milk to encourage healthy eating habits and reduce nutrient deficiency.

“Since the feeding programme began, the number of pupils has increased by 2,000. It was 35,000 and now it’s 37,000. There is a plan on the way to provide them with milk,” she said.

The Minister urged parents to support their children’s talents by being keen on what they are good at, as they interact with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Mwikali lamented about the poor population in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the county, urging parents to discard the notion that the colleges are for academic failures.

“I would like to urge parents to take advantage of local TVETs. They offer skills that can help your children for life. University education is good but there are many successful people who went to technical institutes and also made it in life.” She noted.
