Fresh from winning the Rift Valley regional secondary schools term one games at Nakuru High School, East Africa hockey champions St. Joseph Girls High School have intensified preparations as they shift focus to the national championships and the upcoming East Africa Secondary Schools Games set for Tanzania.
The Trans Nzoia-based side, who are the champions for the fourth consecutive time, sealed the regional title emphatically, thrashing St Mary’s Girls, Tachasis of Nandi county 7-0 in the hockey final to reaffirm their dominance.
Head coach John Lusaka has since promised fireworks as his charges target the national crown under the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) in April in Kisumu county before heading to Tanzania to defend their East Africa trophy.
“We are not relaxing after winning Rift Valley. The real work has just begun. We want the national title, and we are preparing thoroughly to defend our East Africa crown,” Lusaka said.

Lusaka also took time to praise St Joseph Girls High School’s chief principal, Rosebella Munzala Orwaru, for her unwavering support.
“Our success on and off the field is greatly influenced by the backing we receive from the administration. Chief Principal Orwaru has been phenomenal, providing the resources, encouragement and guidance that allow the team to focus entirely on training and performance. Her commitment to nurturing talent is truly inspiring,” Lusaka said.
He revealed that the team is currently undergoing intensive training focusing on speed, tactical awareness, penalty corner efficiency and mental strength to ensure they peak at the right time.
Beyond hockey, the Rift Valley games delivered thrilling contests across various disciplines.
In the boys ‘ category, St Joseph’s Boys (Trans Nzoia) edged out Serem Secondary (Nandi) 33-30 to lift the title, while St Joseph Girls completed a double celebration for the county by winning the girls’ handball crown after defeating AIC Kosirai girls from Nandi county 25-18.

Sanya described the victory as a reward for months of sacrifice and structured preparation.
“This was not an easy match. Serem pushed us to the limit, but I am proud of the boys for staying calm under pressure,” said Sanya. “They showed character, discipline and belief when it mattered most.”
In the boys’ basketball 2025 national 5×5 champions, Laiser Hill Academy (Kajiado) defeated St Joseph’s Boys, Kitale, 87-70 in the final. The girls’ basketball trophy went to St Brigid’s Girls of Trans Nzoia after beating Cheptil of Nandi 77-44.
