The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public universities from corruption, mismanagement, and irregular practices that threaten the quality of education in Kenya.

The renewed commitment comes after the arrest of four senior officials from the University of Nairobi.

The officials were apprehended over the irregular appointment of a top university administrator, which sparked national concern about governance standards in public institutions of higher learning.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud said the commission monitors universities nationwide to ensure compliance with public service ethics and proper recruitment procedures.

He noted that corruption and mismanagement have infiltrated many public institutions, undermining meritocracy and compromising the quality of education.

“We actually have a problem in our institutions of higher learning for various reasons, especially the public institutions. We want to see how we can safeguard them,” he said.

Mohamud said that education is a fundamental pillar of individual and national development and must be protected at all costs.

He added that education is a critical aspect of life and means everything, especially to families who cannot afford to take their children to private universities,” he said.

Mohamud said public universities must be run transparently and be accountable for ensuring equal opportunity.

He said the commission will not hesitate to take legal action against individuals or institutions engaging in fraudulent practices.

Mohamud further revealed that EACC is keen on strengthening oversight mechanisms and promoting transparency in university governance.

The EACC boss made the remarks while touring Diani in Kwale County, where the commission investigates the controversial land acquisition surrounding the centuries-old Kongo Mosque.
