The Methodist church and education stakeholders have blamed indiscipline, the rampant consumption of drugs and alcohol amongst learners for the deteriorating education standards in Imenti Central Sub County of the Meru County.
They have consequently put on notice any trader selling alcohol or drugs to school going children.
Led by the retired Kenya Railways Police Commandant James Kirimi, Mariene Methodist Church Superintendent Minister Reverend Leonard Mati and Mariene Mixed Day Secondary School Principle, David Thuranira they said if the trend is not contained urgently academic performance and especialy that of the boy-child will continue going down.
They said learners and teachers who engage in the consumption of alcohol and drugs completely lack discipline and concentration in class leading to poor academic performance.
Speaking at Mariene Day Secondary School during a fundraiser for the construction of a modern dining hall, they called on the police, chiefs and their assistants to ensure that culprits who are selling drugs and alcohol to students are promptly arrested and charged in court.
“Due to the deteriorating education standards in the constituency we have decided to raise the red flag over the excessive use of alcohol and drugs by the school going children leading to poor academic performance in the entire Meru County”, said Kirimi.
