Driving schools in Kenya have been asked to hold a joint nationwide road safety campaign to reduce road carnage during the festive season.

Kenya Driving Schools Association (KDSA) treasurer Eunice Imwendwa made the call during a ceremony to hand over driving licenses to more than 240 youth who had benefited from a sponsorship by Kajiado North NG-CDF.

Imwendwa, who is also the director of Style Up Driving School, said the schools should work with NTSA to reduce road carnage.

She urged young people to attend driving classes before getting on the road.

Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo said the NG-CDF spent Ksh3.5 million on around 300 youth, with the cost per learner amounting to Ksh10,000.

The MP said the programme continues as it targets more than 2,500 youth in five years.

He said that existing laws must be enforced to reduce deaths on our roads.

“We have good laws; the problem is enforcement. We should also stop drunk driving,” he said, urging motorists to be careful when driving around residential areas since children are on holiday.

The comments come at a time accidents have increased as holiday festivities gather pace.

On Saturday, a young woman died on Magadi Road, Ongata Ronga, near Exciting after she was hit by a drunk driver.

Two days later, eleven people died in an accident at Ngata area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

NTSA reports that 4,449 people lost their lives in 2022, an increase by 3 per cent from 2021 when there were 4271 deaths.
