Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the national government will put up more boarding schools in Maa counties Narok, Samburu and Kajiado to ensure girls get the deserved education.

Rigathi who was speaking during Maa Cultural Festival in Narok County said President William Ruto is committed to supporting education in the region.

“We would like you to support us by taking children to school, we will support putting up of schools in the region,” the DP said.

He also revealed that the government has plans of giving food including milk to schools to keep children in schools.

The government will also build sh 41 million Ushanga Industry in Narok to support bead-making in the region.

The DP requested the Narok governor Patrick Ntutu to give out 10 acres of land where the industry will be built.

The government will also open a skin factory to support the community and give milk coolers to farmers in the region.

The Maa counties are among regions that have few numbers of children enrolled in schools and the projects will address poverty which is a key reason why children are not enrolled in schools.

The counties have also recorded cases where young girls are taken out of schools to undergo Female Genital Mutilation and married forcefully, some of these girls die during FGM or when giving birth.

According to a latest 2023 research by Nature Scientific Reports Journal conducted by United Kingdom scientists, FGM is the leading killer among young girls.

More than 44,320 girls die around the world every year due to FGM; the practice belongs to the first rank in causes of death in Africa.

The findings may underestimate the deaths because the researchers did not look at the obstetric complications arising from FGM that lead to death.

The Maa Cultural Festival was organized by counties Narok, Samburu and Kajiado Counties and will be held yearly.
