Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has decried the worrying rates of consumption of drugs by youth in the coast region, attributing it to bad influence from adults.
The DP said that if the trend continues, it will deal a big blow to education as drug traffickers sneak them into schools.
“Drug abuse has become a travelling plague and we must stand together to fight it in all ways to salvage our youth,” he said.
The DP, addressing regional administrators that included county commissioners, senior police officers, and chiefs and their assistants at Mombasa Agricultural Show Ground, lauded them for attending the launch of the aggressive campaign against drug abuse.
During the meeting, Gachagua led the leaders to consult and interrogate the problems of drug abuse in the region and explore practical and pragmatic steps to eradicate them.

Observing that the proliferation of illicit brews, drugs and substances was posing a significant challenges to society, he said the loss of lives was the tipping point and must be nipped in the bud for people to lead productive lifestyles.
The DP commended the Coast leaders for demonstrating political goodwill towards the initiative, sparing time to engage in the ground breaking session.

He said that the government will open a general rehabilitation centre in the region to assist those who have been adversely affected by the vice.
Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, who flanked the DP, assured the public on the commitment of the Ministry of Education (MoE) to fight the vice in schools.
He said consistent spiritual nourishment of the growing teenagers will direct them towards what is right and shun drug and substance abuse.
