West Pokot County has witnessed a historic turning point in trade union leadership following the election of a new team to steer the affairs of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) West Pokot Branch.

The elections, marked by enthusiasm and high participation among teachers, culminated in a groundbreaking victory for Dorcas Lotome, who was elected Executive Secretary — becoming the first woman to hold the powerful position in the branch’s history.

For decades, the office of Executive Secretary in the West Pokot Branch had been held exclusively by male educators. Madam Lotome’s victory therefore represents more than just a change of guard; it is a symbolic and practical breakthrough for gender equity within the teachers’ union.

Her election signals a new chapter not only for KNUT in West Pokot but also for women in leadership across professional and public institutions in the region.

Education stakeholders and union members alike have described her win as both bold and inspiring, saying that her success reflects evolving attitudes within the teaching fraternity — attitudes that recognize competence, vision, and dedication above traditional gender norms.

Her election has also sparked optimism among female teachers who see in her victory a validation of their own leadership potential. Many have expressed hope that her tenure will inspire greater participation of women in union politics and governance structures.

Alongside Lotome’s historic win, Partich was also re-elected as Chairman of KNUT West Pokot Branch, securing a renewed mandate from teachers. Teachers who cast their votes affirmed their belief in his experience, stability, and commitment to championing their welfare.

Earlier in the day, a delegation comprising Prof. Lonyang’apuo, Julius Murgor, Samuel Moroto, and Rael Kasiwai met the newly elected KNUT officials to congratulate them on their victory.

The meeting symbolised a shared commitment among stakeholders to support the new leadership in advancing the interests of teachers across West Pokot County.

The leaders expressed confidence that collaboration between union leaders and other education stakeholders would strengthen advocacy efforts and foster unity within the teaching fraternity. The delegation assured the officials of their full and unwavering support as they undertake their new responsibilities.
