Members of University Academic Staff Union (UASU) are mourning the demise of their former boss and long serving Chairperson, Muga K’olale.

Philip Chebunett, UASU Secretary General, University of Eldoret Chapter, says K’olale was an astute fighter for university staff members who sacrificed a lot for them.

“All the major agreements were negotiated by K’olale as he laid the foundation of UASU with other members,” he said.

He says current university lecturers and staff pay were pushed by him.

“He was an astute warrior and negotiator who brought dons’ payslips to where it is now,” said Chebunet.

Chebunet said the former union chief  was arrested several times while fighting for dons as he recounts a time during former President Daniel Moi’s regime where he was arrested for publishing a vicious document.

Another low moment, Chebunet says, was when K’olale was denied an opportunity to vie for Chairmanship of UASU in 2021 as he was already a retired don, that was when Grace Nyongesa then from Kisii University ascended to the throne.

UASU was registered by the university staff as a union in 2003 where Muga started out as the Secretary General before rising to chairman of the union.

Other founding members include the former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and Tom Namwamba.
