Don launches mentorship on career and course selection for college hopefuls

Dr Samwel Siringi, UON Lecturer, addresses the press at Nyamache Social Hall after the mentorship workshop.

A university Don has launched a mentorship programme for Bobasi Constituency students who are waiting to join higher learning institutions on careers and selection of courses to pursue.

Dr Samwel Siringi of University of Nairobi (UoN) said previously, teachers used to help the students apply for courses through Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) unlike currently.

The Don noted that the first time applicants were having a tough time deciding which courses to take as no one guided them.

“The students requested for professionals from the area to assist them. I invited experts from KUCCPS and Higher Education Loans Board to assist them,” Dr Siringi said at Nyamache Social Hall during the mentorship programme.

Dr Siringi makes a point during the workshop.

He said the portal is open and will close next week, asking students to hasten and complete the process.

KUCCPS official Jane Wamboi said the portal is open to students who sat KCSE in 2022 and last year and wish to join TVETs, Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTCs) and universities.

“The system is having challenges but our Information and Communication (ICT) staff are working to ensure it is up and running to accommodate all students applying,” Wamboi told the press after the training.

She said the congestion is caused by many applying at the same time, jamming the system. She further said they want to ensure it works so that students are not tempted to apply twice, and appealed to those who encounter problems to log on to KUCCPS website portal and call the numbers available on it to be assisted.
