Doctor decries high rate of HIV infections among school-going children

Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Otomu has decried the high rate of HIV/AIDS infections among teenagers in the county.

He attributed the vice to the general societal delinquency that needs a serious wake-up call from all stakeholders in order to curb it.

“If this trend continues without urgent mitigation, I fear for the future of our children,” the medic lamented.

The Doctor who spoke at Kisii town appealed to parents to guard their children against marauding sex pests who lure their children with goodies and later defile them.

He also asked churches and other social institutions to be at the forefront in providing guidance and counseling services.

According to Kisii Public Health Officer Mrs Leah Ogega the majority of those affected are school going boys and girls under 18 years old.

She asked them to visit VCT centers for testing and counseling.

“There is no way you can know that you are a victim of HIV/AIDS unless you go for medical test. We welcome you to our centers for testing anytime you’re ready,” she advised.

She asked heads of schools to establish small teams from their staff who can handle children with AIDS in their schools and find ways to mitigate trauma and stigmatization.
