Mbeere South MP Geoffrey King’ang’i has fears that students may fail to reopen schools due to famine in his constituency.
The lawmaker called on the national government to consider providing relief food to schools in the area, as they have run out of stocks owing to the current drought situation in the country.
Addressing the Press in Mbeere, the legislator said some parts of the constituency such as Kiambere, Mavuria, Makima and Mwea wards were hardest hit as farmers made no harvest after the long rains failed this year.
“Students in these affected areas are in dire need of food aid and we are asking the government to consider sending part of the relief food here,” the MP said.
He said locals in these areas have adversely been affected by hunger and that there is a need for the government to intervene.
King’ang’i also called on the county government to supplement the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) bursary kitty to ensure more needy students benefit.
For the last three seasons, locals in many parts of Mbeere have not harvested due to rain inadequacy, leading to the hunger strive in the area.
”We’ve been hit by famine; there is nothing on our farms. This has been the case in the last three seasons. We’re calling on the government to come to our aid,” said Nzau Muendo, a resident of Makima.
He said there may be many who may start suffering from malnutrition because of the famine.
