The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has asked the police to subject individuals who harm teachers to disciplinary action.

The union Transmara branch Executive Secretary Mr. Willy Korir claimed that nowadays the community watches as students beat teachers up without consequences.

Mr. Korir was reacting after learning that a Standard Eight pupil slapped his teacher at Nkararo Primary school on Tuesday after being asked to submit his homework for marking.

“The teacher was hit so hard that he dropped his eye glasses. When the matter was reported to the parent, he hid the son instead of assisting the police to arrest him,” he said.

The teacher identified as Charles Miruka was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment and was later discharged.

Korir appealed to the police to arrest and arraign the suspect to serve as an example to those who might intend to do the same.

He also appealed to students to respect their teachers unconditionally in order to succeed in their lives.
