Makueni County Director of Education, James Gachugi has called upon parents to support the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) education system saying that its pros outweighed the cons.
He cited enhancement of learners’ self-esteem, nurturing of talents, parental empowerment and desirable learning outcomes as some of the pros of the system.
While speaking a few days ago during an academic day at AIC Malivani Boarding and Day Primary school in Wote, Makueni county, Gachugi also said that he stood to be guided on whether public primary schools would be allowed to have junior secondary schools.
“It’s a policy matter that is being looked into. I know you have all the facilities, but I stand to be guided on that as far as junior secondary schools are concerned,” said Gachugi.
He added that the many parents he had interacted with had either trashed or supported CBC in equal measure.
“Now that our President will form a special task force to review CBC, there is no cause of alarm as we trust that they will come to a conclusion that we will all will be happy with,” he said.
The Director disclosed that the county had constructed 325 CBC classrooms for both Phase one and two adding that Phase one saw the construction of 255 classrooms while the rest were constructed during Phase two.
“In fact the Phase two classrooms are almost done since we have already commissioned quite a number. It is safe to say that we are ready for CBC,” he said.
The school Head teacher Joshua Kimenzu Mutuse asked the Director to consider his school for junior secondary school saying that it was well-equipped.

He later called upon parents and guardians to take great care of their children over the short holiday and reminded them to ensure their children complete given assignments.
“There is evil, bad influence and other vices lurking. I want my children come back safe and sound the way I handed them to you,” he added.
The Director further asked the parents to monitor their children’s discipline and take time to sit and discuss their academic performance.
