Director reassures parents as flu-like symptoms hit students in Kisii

Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir has rubbished the rumours being spread countywide about a flu-like disease infecting students.

Speaking to Education News, the education boss reprimanded social media users spreading the false information saying that they were raising unnecessary alarm and panic among parents.

“Let me assure parents that their children in boarding schools are safe under devoted principals and their teachers in our different institutions,” he said.

Chirchir said that few students who had exhibited flu-like symptoms had been treated and returned to school hence there was no cause for alarm.

He further assured parents that students who developed symptoms had been given the best medical attention catered by their paid insurance cover.

While not overruling the occurrence of isolated cases of the disease, he promised that his team comprising the education officials and personnel from the Ministry of Health will carry out intensive inspection and provide a comprehensive report on the claims.

“At this time I only ask our parents to be calm as my team will go to the ground to establish the truth about the claims,” he said.

The Director appealed to parents to make frequent visits to schools to check on the academic progress of their children and their general welfare instead of depending on destructive rumours.
