DG Dr Owili: Kisumu County gov’t to strengthen Vocational Training Centres to boost skills

Kisumu County Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili has reaffirmed the County’s unwavering commitment to strengthen Vocational Training Centres as engines of productivity ,innovation and enterprise development.

Speaking during the launch and handover of community digital centre at Katito Vocational Training Centre in Nyakach Sub-County, Dr.Owili said the County will continue to invest in modern infrastructure, enhance oversight and quality assurance and deepen strategic collaborations that uplift young people within the county and prepare them for dynamic future.

Dr Owili thanked Stanbic Foundation, ATC and Microsoft for their sustained commitment and exemplary collaboration in advancing the digital skills programme since its inception in August 2024.

“Ten institutions across the County were selected to participate in this transformative journey and your support is not transactional ,it is truly transformational as you are helping us re-imagine what is possible for our youth and position Kisumu County as a regional hum for technical excellence and digital innovation” he said.

Dr Owili also said that over the past several months ,the programme has successfully concluded a comprehensive Training -of-Trainers programme in digital skills ,as well as refresher training for educators on leveraging artificial intelligence bas 35 instructors so far have been reached through the programme across institutions.

“This was not simply a capacity-building exercise, it was a deliberate investment in strengthening our Hunan capital pipeline as the trainers will now cascade world-class digital competencies to their colleagues, to thousands of learners and ultimately to wider community and this multiplier effect is precisely the kind of systemic impact we envision for our VTC ecosystem” he further said.

Dr Owili said that the County acknowledged with deep appreciation the significant infrastructure developments led by ATC at Ahero, Katito and Akado and the refurbishment of key laboratories which has been completed as installation of computers and connectivity will get finalized in the course of the week.

“These facilities now meet a standard that empowers our trainees to compete confidently in an increasingly digital and globally integrated economy and I wish to humbly encourage our partners to consider extending similar support to the remaining seven institutions; Sianda VTC, Masogo Waware VTC, Koru VTC, Achego VTC ,Rotary VTC ,Wachara VTC & Mariwa VTC,” he added.

He however said that the ceremony was not a merely launch but an affirmation of collective commitment to inclusive digital transformation as it is a demonstration of what effective public-private partnership looks like and it’s a clear signal that Kisumu County is intentionally investing in the skills that drives economic growth ,innovation and job creation.
