Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga has pledged to sponsor 80 needy students to enrol in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
The initiative will be run under Soma TVET sponsorship programme.
She said her move aims to empower the youth with practical skills and experiences to enhance their employability and self-reliance.
Chidzuga, who has been vocal about youth empowerment, said the programme is part of her ongoing efforts to address unemployment and bridge the skills gap in the county.
“Apart from the government programme, I will personally sponsor 20 students in each four Kwale sub counties of Kinango, Matuga, Lunga-Lunga and Msambweni,” she said in a WhatsApp group.
She said that the programme is also aimed at curbing crime and drug abuse among the youth.
Meaningful opportunities
Chidzuga said equipping young people with practical skills and meaningful opportunities, the initiative seeks to steer them away from destructive behaviours and guide them towards productive and fulfilling paths.
She said many youth are decrying lack of opportunities, noting that empowering them is a crucial step in building a safer and more prosperous community.
Chidzuga said that education is the foundation of life and reaffirmed her commitment to empowering underprivileged youth to achieve their dreams and unlock their potential.
She said the sponsorship is not just about education but about giving youth a fighting chance to secure a better future.
The programme will cover tuition fees and other necessary expenses to ensure beneficiaries can focus on acquiring skills in fields such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical engineering, and hospitality.
Market-ready skills
Chidzuga said that TVET colleges play a crucial role in the country’s development agenda by equipping young people with market-ready skills that can help drive the economy forward.
She encouraged youth to embrace the initiative and enrol in nearby colleges.
“To my brothers and sisters, the youth of Kwale, who wish to join these technical and vocational training institutes, please visit these institutions to register and benefit from this education and training programme,” she said.
Chidzuga said the initiative is a golden opportunity for youth to gain practical skills that will not only make them employable but also equip them to start their own businesses and contribute to the growth of our communities.
She said technical education is the backbone of development, and that leveraging hands on skills is investing in a brighter future for youth.
