Deputy governor roots for single-sex schools

By Aggrey Buchunju

Bungoma County Deputy Governor, Prof Charles Ngome has said that the educational environment fostered by a single-sex secondary school is more conducive to learning than that of mixed institutions.
He wants single-sex schools that will ensure better results in KCSE.
He observed that boys and girls in secondary schools are in adolescence stage thus allowing them to mix for whatever reason is dangerous.
“Even saved boys and girls cannot mitigate nature when they reach this stage and the only remedy is to separate them,” he said.
The professor thus appealed to the ministry of education to do away with mixed secondary schools as a measure to curb teenage pregnancy among school going children.
The move, he added, would also improve academic performance in KCSE across the country.
He at the same time raised concern over the acute shortage of teachers and challenged the Teachers Service Commission to hire more instructors to meet the increased student enrollment.
He said that providing free day secondary education without adequate teachers to facilitate the process was an exercise in futility.
