Demonstration jitters force Nairobi schools to push reopening dates

By Vostine Ratemo

Schools in Nairobi and neighbouring counties have pushed re-opening dates from today to tomorrow, March 21, 2023 fearing for the security of students over uncertainty with the planned demonstrations set to take place in the city by the country’s opposition party.

According to the Ministry of Education (MoE), the half-term holiday officially elapsed yesterday with the students expected to report back to schools today.

Parents whose children traverse through the capital city to their schools have also raised concerns with fears that transport systems will be affected as a result of the demos.

This comes amid silence from the MoE after the National Parents Association (NPA) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) asked the Ministry of Education to postpone reopening to a later date.

The schools that have so far pushed the reopening date to tomorrow include Kenya High School and Makini School.

The country’s opposition leader, Raila Odinga had called on his supporters to march to State House to reinforce demands for revival of the economy and improvement of living standards.
