Delivery of services in schools grossly hampered by delayed funding, KNUT official says

Andrew Maina, chairman KNUT Murang'a South Branch and Principal Ichagaki Mixed Secondary School.

The delivery of quality teaching in secondary schools is greatly depressed by delayed disbursement of capitation by the government, besides the huge enrollment of students.

Reacting to these challenges, the chairman of Murang’a South KNUT branch Andrew Maina revealed that principals are hard-pressed by the constraints.

Maina disclosed that the government did not disburse the money fully in 2023, coming even at a time it is pushing for 100 per cent transition to secondary school.

The unionist pointed out that most principals are suffering in silence trying to balance how to keep the students in classrooms without adequate funds.

“The truth of the matter is that the government has failed to disburse the full capitation per students as its officials continue to give false information to the public on the issue,” the union leader remarked.

He said documents of the disbursement in every secondary school can reveal this status against the claims made by government officials.

Maina said due to this shortfall, effective implementation of the curriculum is hurt.

He argued that this is happening while school managements are prohibited from seeking extra funds from parents under the free education caveat.

The unionist observed that some schools have been taken to court by suppliers over delayed payments for their goods and services.

Maina suggested that the government should change its approach to issues and send the capitation funds in time before schools plan their teaching timetable.

Maina, who is the principal of Ichagaki Mixed Secondary School in Maragua, Murang’a County, noted that if honesty is practised by the government, the lives of principals will be more bearable.

He nevertheless applauded the resilience of students amid all these challenges to excel in examinations.
